Let’s face it, no one really likes cleaning their windows. It’s one of those chores that needs to get done but very few take joy in the task. So if you’re going to accomplish the task properly, it’s best you do it right the first time.

Here are five tried and true hacks to help you clean your windows correctly.

1. Spray Thoroughly

The quickest way to do a lousy job with cleaning your windows is to be stingy with your window cleanser. Wiping down glass that is dry is going to leave behind streaks and neglected grime. Glass cleaning solution is cheap to purchase, so there’s no reason not to apply it liberally to your windows.

So give it a few extra spritzes to make sure the entire surface of your window glass is evenly covered in solution, then wipe away.

2. Pick the Right Day

Warm sunny days are great for enjoying some fun in the sun, but when it comes to cleaning your windows, the sun is not your friend. That’s because it can dry your solution much quicker than normal, leaving you with the same problem of too little cleanser for your glass.

The result is dry streaky windows that look terrible when the sunlight hits them at just the right angle. So opt for a day that is cloudy and overcast and you’ll be better off getting those windows to look just how you want them.

3. Proper Equipment

Many homeowners make the mistake of using the wrong materials on their windows, resulting in a job half done. Forget about using paper towels and go instead with a sponge for lathering your glass completely and a rubber squeegee for the most effective cleaning tool available.

If you don’t have one of those, a soft, non-abrasive cloth will do the trick. Avoid using old rags and worn out T-shirt material as these have very little chance of cleaning a window properly.

4. View from All Sides

The easiest way to miss a spot is to view the window from one vantage point alone. Window glass can be tough to get clean unless you’re checking it out from as many different angles as possible. That way you can rest assured that you’ve actually cleaned every inch of the surface thoroughly.

This may take a little more time than you’d like, but it’s certainly better than thinking you’ve done the job right only to notice the window is half clean later on.

5. Don’t Forget the Frames

The glass is just one component of your windows and many homeowners will think they only need to tend to that alone in order to get them clean. But the frames are just as important if you want the job done properly. Think about it, when you choose windows you’re not selecting the glass as much as you are selecting the right frames. So you want to make sure they look their best at all times.

Depending on the type of material they are, you want to limit the amount of moisture they receive and use a damp towel or cloth to wipe away all of the dirt and grime that can easily accumulate. To get all the hard to reach spots, try a soft brush and mild soap and water.
